GENERAL SURGERY
Building surgical judgement through anatomy, precision, safety and compassionate care.
General Surgery brings together clinical assessment, operative principles and perioperative
care to prepare future physicians for safe decisions in common and urgent surgical conditions.
The Department of General Surgery at SBR Institute of Medical Sciences is planned to develop a strong understanding of common surgical conditions, patient assessment and perioperative management while promoting safe, responsible and patient-centred surgical care.
Foundations of Surgical Care
Learners explore abdominal disease, hernias, breast and thyroid conditions, trauma, wound care and vascular access while developing an understanding of open and minimally invasive surgery.
Learning Through Cases and Surgical Skills
Learners engage in lectures, case discussions and clinical demonstrations while developing skills in surgical assessment, aseptic technique, instrument handling, basic suturing and postoperative observation.
Safety, Teamwork and Perioperative Care
Learners understand patient selection, surgical safety, infection prevention, pain control and early recognition of complications while developing awareness of coordinated multidisciplinary care.
Key Highlights
Broad Surgical Framework
Planned learning in gastrointestinal, hernia, breast, thyroid, soft-tissue, trauma and wound-related surgical conditions.
Clinical and Operative Reasoning
Case-based learning will strengthen diagnosis, investigation planning, patient selection and understanding of operative principles.
Core Skills and Asepsis
Structured practice will introduce sterile technique, instruments, basic suturing, wound assessment and safe procedural habits.
Perioperative and Postoperative Care
Emphasises pre-operative preparation, pain management, monitoring, rehabilitation and early recognition of complications.
Emergency Recognition and Teamwork
Builds awareness of acute abdominal illness, trauma and surgical emergencies requiring stabilisation, referral and multidisciplinary care.
